University Park, PA — On August 1, 2024, the Graduate and Professional Student Association (GPSA) at Penn State University passed Resolution #74-01, strongly condemning the violence against student protesters in Bangladesh.
The resolution addresses the severe repression faced by Bangladeshi students protesting against discriminatory civil service hiring quotas. Recent reports indicate that over 200 people have died as a result of the unrest, with the situation exacerbated by mass arrests—over 10,000 individuals have been unlawfully detained in the past week. Although mobile and internet services have been restored, they were previously disrupted, further isolating the affected students.
The GPSA’s resolution denounces the violent response from police and paramilitary forces associated with the ruling Awami League party, including the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL). This crackdown has involved excessive force such as tear gas, rubber bullets, and live ammunition against peaceful protesters.
By passing this resolution, the GPSA reaffirms its commitment to human rights and global justice, aiming to raise awareness and support for those impacted by the crisis in Bangladesh.
